This summer holiday, we're running an online course teaching students how to code and create their own 2D video games using GameMaker - a powerful yet beginner-friendly game engine used to build popular titles like Undertale, Katana ZERO, and Hyper Light Drifter.

Over six weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of programming and game design. We will be working towards creating one complete game which student will playtest, share, and receive feedback on.

Whether they dream of becoming game developers or just want to understand how their favourite games are made, this course is a fantastic investment of their holiday time.

Students will build problem-solving skills, unleash their creativity, and create a tangible project they can be proud of - all while having a lot of fun.

🏋 Classes

We offer two options, both running every weekday for 6 weeks, with 3 hours of live instruction each day.

Morning Session – Intermediate Coders (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM):

This track is designed for students who already have some experience with coding. The specific language doesn’t matter, but they should be familiar with core programming concepts like variables, if statements, loops, and functions. This group will move at a faster pace and take on a more ambitious project using GameMaker.

Afternoon Session – Beginner Coders (1:00 PM - 4:00 PM):

Perfect for students who are new to coding or game development. We'll start from the very basics, introducing programming concepts and gradually building up to a complete, playable 2D game. The only requirement is curiosity and a willingness to learn.

► Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What hardware / software will I need?

A: Each student will need a computer or laptop (Windows and Mac are both OK). We will be using GameMaker which can be downloaded for free. GameMaker is not very difficult to run so most computers will be able to handle it. Any games you make can be released for free without paying for a license.

Q: What programming language will we learn?

A: We will be using GameMaker Language which is very similar to JavaScript but is more purpose-built for developing games.

Q: How many students are in each class?

A: On average, there will be 3 to 5 students in each class. We find this to be a good balance as every student gets plenty of specific assistance but also has a few other people to bounce ideas off of.

Q: What if I'm finding the class too easy / hard?

A: If you realise after the first session that you are finding things to easy or hard, we are happy to let you switch into the other class.

Q: What if I have to miss a lesson (due to illness or another reason)?

A: If you will miss one session, we may be able to arrange for you to make up some or all of the instruction time at another point. In any case, all of the sessions will be recorded and we will ensure that you have support and won't fall behind.

If you have to miss the majority of the sessions then we will do our best to arrange a refund if possible.
